Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China (Zed Books, 2014) by Leta Hong Fincher tells me that her book will show how women in China no longer hold up half the sky and women who don’t marry by twenty-six are suffering from this inequality. Laying out the structural discrimination against women in China speaks to broader problems with China’s economy, politics, and development.ĭr. In ‘Leftover’ Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China, Leta Hong Fincher debunks the claim that women have fared well as a result of China’s economic reforms and breakneck growth. Those gains have been eroded in the post-socialist era women in China have experienced a dramatic rollback of many rights and gains relative to men. After China’s Communist revolution of 1949, Chairman Mao famously proclaimed that “women hold up half the sky.” In the early years of the People’s Republic, the Communist Party sought to transform gender relations with expansive initiatives including the Marriage Law and assigning urban women jobs. A century ago, Chinese feminists fighting for the emancipation of women helped spark the Republican Revolution, which overthrew the Qing empire. I would emigrate to a foreign country and give up dancing to unwrap blood-soaked bandages every hour of every day if it meant food and shelter for my family. I would die for my family if I needed to. One of the standouts of the novel was perhaps the representation of Asian culture and characters that it provided (most of the characters in this novel were Asian) and Ever’s complicated relationship with her parents. Although the story is very clearly set in Taiwan and places an overarching focus on that culture, something undoubtedly feels… missing. While the novel does give the reader insight into the various different sides of Taiwan (for example, when Ever ends up doing a shot that consists entirely of a freshly dead snake’s blood), I anticipated more than what I got. Just from the synopsis, readers develop the expectation that Loveboat, Taipei will explore multiple aspects of Taiwan both as a country as a whole and in the context of the Chien Tan camp after all, it’s in the name. Right off the bat, one of the central themes in the novel is Taiwanese culture. And what is the symbolic role of her death in the play? Why is she apparently crucified? Many original theatre-goers were shocked and repulsed by this part of the play, deeming it gratuitous. Eliot, that a play is a less personal form than a poem (for some reason we always assume a poem is about the poet, whereas we don’t do this with a piece of drama), and so – paradoxically – Eliot was able to make his plays more autobiographical precisely because people didn’t expect them to be personal.Ī few troubling questions remain about The Cocktail Party – questions which cannot be neatly resolved by analysis of the text. Lyndall Gordon remarks in her biography of Eliot, The Imperfect Life of T. Eliot’s plays are, in a sense, more clearly autobiographical than his poetry. |
